A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck late last night in southeastern Hawke's Bay, within 5km of Pōrangahau.
The quake had a reported depth of 16km, and was considered a "strong earthquake" by GeoNet.
More than 2000 people reported feeling the quake, which hit at about 11.20pm.
Yesterday, more than 37,000 people reported feeling a magnitude 5.7 earthquake which shook Wellington shortly after 5am.
It struck west of Wellington at a depth of about 30km, GeoNet said.
The shaking was "strong", GeoNet said, adding on X: "Another reminder that earthquakes can occur anywhere in New Zealand at any time.
"In the event of a large earthquake: Drop, Cover and Hold."
