1 Hundreds of jobs to go under proposal to close Timaru meatworks

A proposal to close the Smithfield plant in Canterbury has been tabled by Alliance Group.

Employees were told at a meeting today.

About 600 staff are affected by the proposal, a statement from Alliance Group said.

2 Hurricane Helene strengthens to a Category 4 hurricane

Helene strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane hours ahead of its expected landfall on Florida's northwest coast, and forecasters warned that the enormous storm could create a "nightmare" surge in coastal areas and bring dangerous winds and rain across much of the southeastern US.

Category 4 hurricanes have sustained winds over 209km/h that can severely damage homes, snap trees, and down power lines. Strong winds have already cut power to more than 250,000 homes and businesses in Florida, according to the tracking site poweroutage.us.

The hurricane was about 195km west of Tampa and had sustained winds of 215km/h, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

3 Man with 'numerous injuries' dies in cell at Mt Eden Corrections Facility

Police are investigating the death of a prisoner who was found in his cell at Mt Eden Corrections Facility with "numerous injuries".

Police detective inspector Glenn Baldwin said the inmate was located deceased in his cell just before 10am.

Corrections said the man had been in a double-bunked cell - the other prisoner who had been residing in the cell is now in a single cell.

Police have launched a homicide investigation.

4 Liam Lawson on his 'one shot', Ricciardo talks and 'cut-throat' F1

New Zealander Liam Lawson says he "always believed" he'd get his shot in Formula 1 — and he "definitely" feels ready for it.

It was announced this morning that Australian Daniel Ricciardo was released by Red Bull Racing and Lawson will immediately replace him for the remaining six races of the season.

Lawson told 1News: "It's very cool. Obviously it's been a very long time coming, and a lot of hard work for a lot of people, so it's very special."

5 'Bulls***' call as Rotorua Council agrees lease offer for golf land

A new 30-year lease will be offered to a golf club at the centre of heated council debates.

While a controversial "guillotine clause" remains, Rotorua Lakes Council's newly agreed lease offer rules out using Springfield Golf Course for housing and only allows alternate uses that would keep it a green space.

The debate during a more than five-hour council meeting had heated moments, with one councillor apologising for calling a comment "bulls***" and the process a "sham".
