An Australian man has been arrested after swimming from police for 2.5km down a Gold Coast waterway.

The man was seen swimming away from Southport, near tourist hub Surfers Paradise, in the early hours of Friday morning, 9News reported.

River police pursued the man, which caused some traffic delays as some parts of a nearby bridge were closed as the man swam police further inland.

After being followed by police for two hours, the man left the water at a riverbank in Bundall.

He tried to escape after leaving the water, but was tackled and arrested by police waiting on the riverbank.

9News reports he was taken into custody.
