Te Matatini launch to reveal judges

September 19, 2024
Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga

The launch of Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga 2025 will take place tomorrow at Pukekura (Bowl of Brooklands) in Ngāmotu (New Plymouth) where the panel of judges tasked with the job of selecting the top kapa haka in Aotearoa New Zealand will be announced.

The draw for the competition was revealed in July during a weekend-long haka symposium at Tūrangawaewae Marae, Ngāruawāhia, where 55 groups were allocated to four different pools: Te Ihu, Te Haumi, Te Kei, and the newly introduced Te Awa. Each pool have been assigned a day to compete.

The competition was extended to include an extra day due to the record-breaking number of qualifying haka groups.

The top three groups from each pool will go through to perform in the finals named Te Mātangirua on the final day of Te Matatini.

Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga will take place next year at Pukekura from February 25 to March 1.

On behalf of Te Karere, watch the livestream of the launch event in collaboration with Whakaata Māori, Te Reo o Te Uru and Te Matatini on 1News.co.nz from 10am on Friday, September 20.
