The heartbroken mother of a 33-year-old bodybuilder who died after he spent 15 hours unconscious in a gym shower without anyone noticing wants a coronial inquest into his death.
Giuliano Pirone was working out at Culture Fitness 24/7 in Wanneroo, Perth when he felt unwell and made his way to a shower cubicle, where he collapsed early on August 20.
After his family members raised the alarm with police, officers tracked the man's phone to the gym where they broke down the door and found him slumped on the floor unconscious under cold running water.
His mother Daniela Pirone was visibly emotional as she told 9News of the family's heartbreak following the death of their beloved son and said they want a coronial inquest opened into his death.
"His life should not have ended this way... I cannot contemplate life without him," she said.
Pirone was in an induced coma on life support at Joondalup hospital for two weeks before he died.
An MRI confirmed he had lost brain function, and his family made the decision to switch off his life support.
"He was low in insulin but lacked the oxygen in his brain, so he must've had a seizure," Daniela told 9News.
The family has called for the gym to establish a check in, check out system that would alert staff if a patron had not left the gym after a number of hours.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the gym said "as a 24-hour gym facility, we remain committed to maintaining a safe, secure and accessible environment for all our members".
