The owners of a thieving cat in Māpua, near Nelson, are attempting to return his spoils.

MJ's owners Anna and Jess Smythe said the feline has snatched gardening gloves, socks, singlets, oily rags, a wooden rat trap, and even a neighbour's bra.

"I would say we're looking at around 50 pairs [of gardening gloves], and we've got a lot that have been unclaimed," said Anna.

"I've got a big box there to go through."

Anna said the neighbours "do like" MJ but that he is becoming a "bit much now".

"One neighbour has got some water to spray when he's on the run."

Anna said she believes MJ's exploits "will continue".

"It would be nice if it was a bit more exciting."

Jess said MJ was "the best" cat.

"He comes in just meowing and then he drops his present on the floor."

The pair have posted photos of MJ's haul on Facebook, inviting the rightful owners to claim their items.
