Police are investigating after a body was found in a vehicle on fire on State Highway 1 in Waikato last night.
Emergency services were called to the scene at about 7pm after a report of a car on fire off the highway just north of Ātiamuri.
"Once the fire was extinguished, a body was located in the front seat," a police spokesperson said.
Officers are now working to determine the cause of the fire and the circumstances of the person's death.
The spokesperson said this was "expected to take some time".
Police said they would like to hear from anyone who witnessed anything in the area from around 6pm, "specifically the movements of a black Suzuki Swift".
A scene examination will continue this morning.
Ātiamuri is located between Taupō and Rotorua.
A Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) spokesperson said they sent one firetruck and two fire investigators to the scene.
Anyone who could help was asked to call police on 105.
