1 Hundreds of jobs to go as Winstone Pulp confirms mill closures

Around 230 workers will lose their jobs as Winstone Pulp International (WPI), the Ruapehu District’s largest employer, confirms it will shutter two mills in the central North Island.

Staff were told of the decision this afternoon, with production already on hiatus. The company, which runs Tangiwai Sawmill and Karioi Pulpmill, proposed to indefinitely close its operations at a staff meeting last month.

2 Safety assurances sought after woman's death in ED waiting room - Health Minister

Health Minister Shane Reti has sought assurances over safety following the death of a woman who was waiting for care at Rotorua Hospital’s ED.

It was revealed today the woman died in the waiting room of the emergency department last month, after waiting three hours to be seen.

RNZ reported staff said the patient should have been seen within an hour but the department was short-staffed, and staff had written to management just two weeks earlier signalling concerns about excessive wait-times.
