Kīngi Tuheitia has died, aged 69.
His death follows his 18th anniversary Koroneihana (coronation) celebrations earlier this month. He has been remembered in numerous tributes as a "kind", "listening" and "humble" man whose influence has left an "indelible mark on our nation".
King Charles III said he was "profoundly saddened" to hear of Kīngi Tuheitia's death, having spoken on the phone with him earlier this month.
The New Zealand flag will be flown at half-mast on all Government and public buildings "with immediate effect" until further notice, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage said.

3 America's Cup: Team New Zealand assesses damage after crane incident
Team New Zealand had a crane that was lifting its AC75 Taihoro onto its cradle fail, according to the team, and the boat "landed heavily".
The team said it will need to assess the damage but it wouldn't be able to sail on Friday. No crew members were hurt in the incident.
The America's Cup is the world oldest international sports trophy. Only four countries — the US, New Zealand, Australia and Switzerland — have ever won it.
4 Northwest gales, heavy rain for large parts of New Zealand this weekend
Heavy rain and severe northwesterly gales are expected to affect large parts of the country over the weekend, with the heaviest falls on the west of the South Island.
MetService has issued orange heavy rain and strong wind warnings for Westland, the Canterbury High Country and the Tararua Range from Saturday through until Sunday.
5 Choking warning issued over jelly cups with konjac ingredient
New Zealand Food Safety has warned people not to consume mini jelly cups containing konjac as they may present a choking hazard, particularly for young children and the elderly.
Thousands of similar mini jelly cups were seized and destroyed in Australia recently, where the product was banned.

Nicole Murray was New Zealand's first Para athlete to compete in Paris overnight and set a new national record before finishing fifth in the final of the Women’s C4-5 500m Time Trial.
"I am blown away I got to the final," Murray told 1News. "It was a stacked field, and the time trial is definitely not my best race, so just to make the final is incredible."
