Rescue operation for whale caught in ropes in Sydney Harbour

August 23, 2024

A rescue operation in ongoing for a whale caught in netting in the Sydney Harbour .

The juvenile humpback whale was first spotted yesterday afternoon in the eastern harbour, near Shark Island, according to Nine.

A whale watching cruise first spotted the mammal, who then alerted wildlife rehabilitation group ORRCA.

It is believed the whale's fin was hooked in a net.

Rescuers had to abandon efforts last night to cut the whale free as darkness fell. Orange buoys were attached to the netting in an effort to slow down the mammal while volunteers cut it free, but a rope wrapped around the whale was unable to be cut.

As rescue attempts begin again on Friday, ORCCA has reminded people on the harbour to maintain the legal approach distance of 300m to the humpback.

"Members of the public are reminded to not approach or enter the water near an entangled whale, or attempt to disentangle it."
