Police are investigating the theft of several pride flags removed from poles around Queenstown Bay and Village Green.

Queenstown Sergeant Steve Watt said the theft occurred "sometime in the last week" and was reported to police yesterday.

Watt said the theft was "disappointing" as it occurred right before the Winter Pride kicked off today.

"While we can't know the motive for removing these flags until we have identified those responsible, we know how frustrating it is for the organisers of this vibrant festival that injects a real boost to our city.

"We're keen to hear from anyone who might have information about this theft, or who knows who is responsible."

Anyone who can assist was urged to contact police on 105.

The 11-day Winter Pride festival runs from today until Sunday, September 1.

A Givealittle page has been launched to raise funds to replace the flags — which were estimated to cost $400 each to produce.

The page said the flags "symbolised our commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and diverse environment for everyone who calls Queenstown home or visits our beautiful town".
