A shop assistant has been injured following an aggravated robbery at a petrol station in Waitangi over the weekend.

Police say officers were called after three men — including two armed with weapons — entered Caltex Waitangi at around 8.39pm yesterday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Christian Fouhy said the shop assistant was "assaulted and received moderate injuries".

The weapons involved were not firearms, he said.

The trio then took "a number of items, including cash" before fleeing in a vehicle which had been reported stolen from Dargaville earlier that day, Fouhy said.

The car, a Toyota Aqua with registration PFA761, was later found abandoned on Haruru Falls Rd.

"The vehicle has since been towed for forensic examination, however we would like to hear from anyone who may have seen this vehicle at any time yesterday.

"Police are working hard to find those responsible and are appealing to the public for any information which may assist."

Anyone who saw the vehicle travelling between Waitangi and Dargaville yesterday, or has any information that may assist officers, has been urged to contact police.
