A homicide investigation has been launched after a man found in his vehicle with a gunshot wound died in Auckland's Pakuranga Heights this morning.

Police say officers were called following reports "several gunshots" had been heard on Marvon Downs Ave at around 6.45am, Detective Inspector Shaun Vickers said.

"Upon arrival, a man with a gunshot wound was located inside a vehicle, and despite efforts from first responders, he sadly died at the scene."

Vickers said an "increased police presence" will be visible in the area in the coming days while officers "piece together what has led to this and who is responsible".

"We are continuing to speak to a number of people in the area at the time and are keen to hear from anyone who hasn't already spoken with us."

Inquiries to locate the people believed to be responsible are ongoing, he said.

A post-mortem examination and formal identification will be carried out over the coming days.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact police.

"More information will be provided to media proactively, when we are in a position to do so."

'Incredibly disturbing'

One resident told 1News they had heard gunshots and screaming before emergency services arrived on the scene.

Police shift commander Kerry Watson said earlier today police had received "a number of phone calls" this morning.

"These calls were related to quite a serious event that was unfolding, we've termed it a critical incident."

In an update at 8.30am, a police spokesperson confirmed one person was found injured in a vehicle at the intersection of Marvon Downs Ave and Pixie Pl.

"They were attended to by medical services, but sadly have died at the scene."

Watson said officers were speaking to "a number of witnesses", adding that there would be a large police presence in the area as officers investigate.

"It's going to take us some time to piece together what happened in the events that led up to this critical incident."

There were at least eight police cars around a property on Marvon Downs Ave shortly after 7.30am.

Armed police stood guard over a cordoned-off part of the street.

A St John spokesperson said they attended the scene, but referred further questions to police.

Elm Park School principal Sarah Baleicakau said in a post to social media this morning that there was "no immediate danger" to the school on Gossamer Dr and the school would remain open.

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown said he was "horrified" to hear about the shooting.

"This will be incredibly disturbing for the community and neighbours," he said on X.

Brown urged anyone with information to contact police.
