1 Police confirm one dead at 'critical incident' in Pakuranga Heights

One person died in a vehicle in Auckland's Pakuranga Heights this morning after armed police officers responded to a "critical incident".

Police said it received a report of gunshots being heard in the Marvon Downs Ave area at 6.45am today.

In a later update police confirmed one person was found injured in a vehicle, and they died at the scene.

Police said investigators were talking to "a number of witnesses".

2 Major bank cuts some fixed mortgage rates, term deposits

ANZ is cutting some of its fixed mortgage rates following the Reserve Bank's decision to lower the Official Cash Rate (OCR) last week.

The decrease in home loan rates includes a 40 basis point drop in its one-year special (for customers with a minimum 20% equity) rate to 6.45% and a 50 basis point drop to 5.99 in the 18-month special rate.

In today's announcement, ANZ also signalled it was cutting some term deposit rates as well.

On Wednesday last week, the Reserve Bank dropped the OCR by 25 basis points to 5.25%, prompting a flurry in mortgage rate cuts.

The cold sweeping across the country is set to let up on Wednesday — during the day at least — however, the rain is going to be more persistent and looks to remain off and on until at least the end of the week, according to MetService.

MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane described it as "yo-yo weather at its finest", to go from "snow to sunshine back to blustery winds all in a matter of days".

ONE NEW BANKSY WORK

The gorilla and other animals that appeared to have escaped from the London Zoo in Banksy's most recent work have been taken into safekeeping.

The zoo said it removed the elusive street artist's mural on its gate Friday evening to preserve it and return its entrance to full operation after mobs of visitors came to see it over five days last week.

It was covered with a reproduction of the work and a sign using British slang that said: "Banksy woz ere."
