New Zealander Hayden Wilde has again been beaten in the final moments of a triathlon by his Olympic nemesis Alex Yee, who overtook Wilde in the final kilometre of the run in Paris to win Olympic gold recently.
Englishman Lee performed a similar manoeuvre at the Supertri Boston this morning, although this time Lee left it even later.
The gruelling Supertri enduro format in Boston featured a 300m swim, a 4km bike ride and 1.6km run heat performed three times in succession without a break.
To make it more challenging, if athletes fall 90 seconds behind the leader they are eliminated from the race.
Like in Paris, Wilde appeared on track for the win on the run leg, only to be passed by the fast-finishing Yee, who broke the tape while crossing his arms.
Wilde, finishing a couple of seconds behind Yee, threw up his arms in what looked like frustration at Yee’s gesture.
Wilde, who won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, was widely praised for his impressive sportsmanship in embracing Yee despite his disappointment in finishing second in Paris.
"I think I’ve been seeing too many silvers in the last couple of weeks, it would be nice to get a gold – bring on Chicago," Wilde said after the race of the next leg of the series.
Wilde said he wasn't impressed with having to take on the load at the front of the bike leg.
"Ah, nah, close isn’t good enough," Wilde said.
"It was nice to have [teammate Luis] Vincent up there, we played a good team tactic. I didn’t expect him to come through.
"But yeah, nah, just a bit of a shame the other boys didn’t decide to come and do some work, yeah they were just hiding a bit and waiting for the run."
