Whakatāne pedestrian 'hit by at least two vehicles', hospitalised

Police believe a man who was seriously injured in Whakatāne overnight was hit by "at least two vehicles".

The man was injured shortly after midnight on White Pine Bush Rd. He was still in hospital in a critical condition this morning.

"It is believed that the injured man was hit by at least two vehicles," a police spokesperson said.

"The driver from one of these vehicles is assisting police with our enquiries, and police are appealing for the driver of the second vehicle – described as a blue SUV – to come forward.

"We would also like to hear from anyone else travelling on or near White Pine Bush Rd around the time of the crash, who may have information relating to the case."

Anyone with information was urged to contact police by calling 105.
