An orange heavy rain warning ahead of a wet and windy weekend for many.

MetService has issued several watches and one orange heavy rain warning ahead of what is shaping up to be a wet and windy weekend for many.

Saturday is expected to get wetter as the day goes on for the North Island as a weather system connected to a low pressure system approaches from the Tasman Sea.

The Tararua Range is under an orange heavy rain warning from 9pm on Saturday until 9pm Sunday, with rainfall of 100mm to 150mm forecast.

Heavy rain watches have been issued for northern Taranaki from 3pm Saturday to 6am Sunday, for the eastern Bay of Plenty and northwest Gisborne from 3pm, and for Tasman west of Motueka from 6pm Saturday to noon on Sunday.

Rain-proof ponchos may be a prerequisite for All Blacks fans at Auckland's Eden Park on Saturday night too as showers are expected to turn into more steady rain.

Colder southwesterlies bring the possibility of snowfall to inland areas of the South Island from Sunday afternoon until Monday.

A heavy snow watch has been issued for inland parts of Canterbury north of Waipara and Marlborough south of State Highway 63. This is in place for areas above 400m from 3pm to 10pm on Sunday.

On Monday, more cold air pushes in and could bring snowfall down to 200m for the southern South Island.
