A man has been arrested in the rural Hawke's Bay town of Whakatu following a police operation which saw residents in some streets asked to stay inside.
A "person of interest" who was wanted "in relation to a number of previous offences" was sighted by police in Whakatu just after 9.30am this morning, Hawke's Bay Area Commander Inspector Martin James said.
He said the person entered a residential address on Station Rd, making verbal threats.
The armed offenders squad, police dog unit and the police negotiation team were then called to assist as a precaution.
Whakatu residents were asked to stay home but police later revised the cordons "to Station Road, Railway Road, and State Highway 51, and the area within those three intersections".
"People outside this area are able to go about their business without restrictions," police earlier said.
The man, 37, was arrested without incident just after 1.30pm this afternoon, James said.
The man faces "a number of charges in relation to this incident and investigations are ongoing".
All cordons in the area have now been lifted.
"We wish to thank residents for their cooperation and understanding while Police worked to resolve this matter."
Whakatu is 8km north-east from the centre of Hastings, and as of 2023, had a population of 690.
