1 Per capita Olympics – the most important Games of them all

When you’re not Team USA or the People's Republic of China, you need to get creative when it comes to Olympic medal table bragging rights.

If you're the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, for example, you might suggest that the European Union sits atop the medal table with 189 medals.

Suggesting that an economic and political union of 27 countries is topping the Olympics medal table is, of course, ridiculous.

2 Pauline Hanna told a friend: 'Philip's become beastly'

At the trial of Philip Polkinghorne, a friend and health work colleague of alleged murder victim Pauline Hanna, described the woman as amazing, bright, capable, determined, and absolutely reliable.

Polkinghorne, a retired eye surgeon who's now 71, is charged with murdering his wife by strangling her.

The witness told the court that Hanna couldn't work on a project one night because "Philip's become beastly".

4 Former Gloriavale teacher jailed for sexual and violent offending

A former Gloriavale teacher who abused or assaulted 21 victims has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Just Standfast previously pleaded guilty to two charges of sex violation by unlawful sexual connection against two girls aged seven and 14, 10 charges of indecent assault on girls under the age of 12, and six charges of indecent assault against girls aged between 12 and 16.

The 72-year-old also admitted charges of assault with blunt weapons against five boys and a man.

Former Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper Alex Paulsen has completed a shock move back to New Zealand shores, signing with new A-League club Auckland FC.

Paulsen, 22, signed for AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League in June but has been sent on loan from the English club back to the A-League.

Dame Lisa Carrington has landed her seventh Olympic medal, her sixth gold, with the women's K4 500 crew at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The combination of Carrington, Alicia Hoskin, Olivia Brett and Tara Vaughan edged out Germany for gold at Vaires sur Marne Nautical Stadium late on Thursday (NZ time).

ONE EXPENSIVE COFFEE

New Zealand's coffee sector is under pressure as volatile bean prices collide with a weaker New Zealand dollar, increased freight costs and higher costs of doing business.

One roaster says if coffee prices had kept up with the increase in cafe costs, a flat white would now be selling for $7, not the more like $5 that most cafes price them at.

Stats NZ data shows the cost of an average takeaway coffee has risen from $2.89 in June of 2006 to $3.72 in June of 2016 and $4.79 in June this year.

So, would you pay $7 for a standard coffee?
