Le Journal: Day 12 from the Paris Olympics

Your morning Olympics catch-up on the action you might've missed from overnight, and a look behind the scenes at what’s going on in Paris.

Hamish Kerr overcomes jitters to reach final

Kiwi high jumper Hamish Kerr had to drag himself back from near-disaster to keep his Paris medal hopes alive through qualifying at Stade de France.

The world indoor champion finally advanced to the final with a clearance of 2.27m, one of only five to achieve that height.

But it didn’t come without some nervous moments.

Two failed jumps had him “trying not to cry”, before he finally hit the heights he’s capable of.

Pole vault trio’s final battle

The New Zealand pole vaulting trio of Imogen Ayris, Eliza McCartney, and Olivia McTaggart all made it through to this morning’s final of 20 athletes.

That epically long final had the three Kiwis going well early on. Ultimately, though, they all missed out on the medal places - see how it unfolded here.

Australia's Nina Kennedy won gold.

Flipping awesome transformation

The gymnastics arena is now playing home to basketball, with this stunning transformation of the arena:

Team USA was in the house at Bercy, with all the stars stepping on court (albeit only for a quarter for the King, LeBron James).

Olympics reporter Henry McMullan says the energy was electric, as the team soared past Brazil to clinch their semifinal spot.

“It was the sheer thrill of seeing these giants in action that truly captivated the crowd,” he says.

Phones flashed with every LeBron James move, while chants for Curry and James echoed throughout the venue.

Star-struck McMullan even caught a word with Curry in the media mixed zone.

A tongue in cheek question about the possibility of an exhibition game in New Zealand wasn’t rejected by Curry.

“The answer wasn’t a firm yes, but it wasn’t a no either!” insisted an ever-hopeful McMullan.
