Police are investigating an infant's "unexplained" death in Canterbury earlier this week.

A police spokesperson said the child died in North Canterbury on Monday morning.

"At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained, and police are working to determine the circumstances."

A post mortem examination was carried out yesterday.
