Le Journal: Day 11 from the Paris Olympics

Julian David celebrates making the quarterfinals at Paris 2024.

Your morning Olympics catch-up on the action you might've missed from overnight, and a look behind the scenes at what’s going on in Paris.

Speed climber scrambles into quarters

19-year-old Olympic debutant Julian David notched up a PB 5.20s in the speed climbing to move into the quarterfinals on Thursday night (NZ time).

The youngster beat Iranian Reza Alipour Shenazandifard in the elimination round.

The competition is hot, with the Olympic record broken five times in the seeding heats alone.

Team USA’s Sam Watson raced up the wall in 4.75s, 0.04s faster than the world record he set back in April.

Paddlers on track

It was a case of ‘job done’ for the Kiwi kayakers in the K4 and K2 heats.

The team of Dame Lisa Carrington, Alicia Hoskin, Olivia Brett, and Tara Vaughan eased straight into the final.

New Zealand women's K4- Olivia Brett, Lisa Carrington, Alicia Hoskin and Tara Vaughan in their heat.

Carrington and Hoskin then returned to the water to impress in the K2 500, as they eased into the semis.

It’s shaping up as another big week at Vaires-sur-Marnes – the eagerly-anticipated match up of Carrington, our most successful Olympian, and Aimee Fisher looms large.

Garçon, there’s a worm in my meal

It seems not everyone’s thrilled with the food at the Olympic village.

British swimming star Adam Peaty has slammed the catering for a lack of protein options and long queues.

In an interview with the i paper, the six-time Olympic medallist rubbished the Games’ sustainability pledges – with 60% of meals served meatless, and a third plant-based.

“The narrative of sustainability has just been pushed on the athletes,” he said. “I want meat, I need meat to perform and that’s what I eat at home, so why should I change?

“I like my fish and people are finding worms in the fish. It’s just not good enough. The standard, we’re looking at the best of the best in the world, and we’re not feeding them the best.”
