1 Family remembers 'vibrant' woman whose body found on Northland beach

The family of a woman found dead near a Northland beach say she was a "vibrant", "uplifting" woman who touched people's hearts.

Joanna Mai Sione-Lauaki was reported missing on Friday after failing to return home on Thursday night, Detective Senior Sergeant John Clayton said.

1News understands police were called after she texted the word "help" to her husband some time between Thursday night and Friday morning, when he saw the message.

A friend of accused murderer Philip Polkinghorne says he noticed changes in him that he couldn't reconcile, saying he had become "manic" and "irrational".

A High Court trial is continuing for Polkinghorne. The Crown says he killed his wife Pauline Hanna and staged it to make it look like a suicide.

Polkinghorne's defence is that nothing sinister happened and that he found Hanna after she took her own life in their Remuera home.
