Athletes in action: Can kayak queen Dame Lisa Carrington add to Olympic legacy at Paris?

Lisa Carrington training on Lake Pupuke.

New Zealand's most successful Olympian — Dame Lisa Carrington — makes her first appearance at the Paris Games, when she takes her seat in our women's K2 and K4 boats at Vaires sur Marine Nautical Stadium.

Dame Lisa, 35, will line up at her fourth Olympics with five golds and a bronze already on her CV, but heavily favoured more to her medal haul.

Exactly what colour they are remains to be seen and the intriguing sub-plot around the NZ team is the emergence of Aimee Fisher as a genuine rival for gold in the K1 500 later in the programme.

Both will line up in separate boats in tonight's K2 500 heats, where Carrington teams with Alicia Hoskin and Fisher with Lucy Matehaere. Carrington also anchors a foursome of Hoskin, Olivia Brett and Tara Vaughan that won last year's world title at Duisberg.

In track cycling, the men's pursuit team will scramble for a shot at bronze, after finishing only sixth in qualifying, while the women's pursuiters will try to build on the silver medal won by their sprinters last night.

Sailor Thomas Saunders will contest the men's dinghy medal race, but even the double-points format cannot boost him into a medal from his current seventh position.

Marseille winds permitting, Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson will wind up their fleet racing in the Nacra class, well placed for a medal challenge in third place.

At the climbing venue, Julian David becomes the first Kiwi man to contest the speed event in its Olympic debut.
