4.8 magnitude earthquake near Wellington causes strong shaking

The quake was just off the coast of Wellington.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake jolted many Kiwis out of bed late this evening when it struck near Wellington just before midnight.

GeoNet said the quake hit at 11.38pm, in the water 15 kilometres south-west of the capital.

It struck at a relatively shallow depth of 13 kilometres, after revision.

More than 17,000 people reported feeling the tremblor.

One person on X said the quake was accompanied by big loud scary booms.

Another posted an image of a webcam being knocked off their computer screen.

The shaking was reportedly felt far from the epicentre according to GeoNet's map.
