1 Schoolkids miss out on new shoes, raincoats as cost of living bites

Children across the country are struggling this winter with many lacking appropriate shoes for the cold months, an advocate says.

Last year, KidsCan supplied more than 50,000 pairs of shoes to students in need. This year, they have nearly 100 schools on their waitlist. KidsCan chief executive Julie Chapman told Breakfast this morning that the situation is "very bad".

All Blacks captain Scott Barrett’s finger injury has ruled him out of Saturday’s Test against Argentina in Wellington and the one a week later in Auckland.

Lock Barrett suffered the injury in the win over Fiji in San Diego and he received surgery on his return. Ardie Savea will captain the side over the next fortnight, with Codie Taylor stepping up to a vice-captain role alongside midfielder Jordie Barrett.

A car was left hanging over a three-metre drop after colliding with a house on Auckland's North Shore last night. A man has been charged with driving with excess breath alcohol and dangerous driving over the crash.

Emergency services attended the scene on Fairview Ave in Albany after police were alerted to the incident at around 7.50pm.
