There was late drama in the men's cycling road race in Paris today as Belgium's Remco Evenepoel needed a bike change while charging for gold.
Evenepoel was clear of the chasing pack near the end of the race when he suffered a bike malfunction, jumping off and gesticulating wildly in the middle of the road for a replacement.
Luckily his support team were right there with him to quickly deliver a new bike setting the Belgian rider back on his way.
Evenepoel had no idea how close the chasing riders were and took off at speed desperate not to lose out on the gold.
His distance to the pack was large enough that he held them off and crossed to claim a historic gold that saw him become the first cyclist to ever claim gold in the time trial and road race Olympic events.
French riders claimed silver and bronze, more than a minute behind Evenepoel.
Kiwis Corbin Strong and Laurence Pithie finished in 27th and 39th place respectively.
