Athletes in action: Scullers push for more rowing medals at Paris

Emma Twigg wins her single sculls semi at Paris.

Rowers Emma Twigg and Tom Mackintosh carry New Zealand's medal hopes tonight, as they contest their respective single sculls finals at Vaires sur Marne Nautical Stadium.

In her fifth Olympics, Twigg is defending her gold medal from Tokyo 2020, a performance that — at the time — seemed to provide a fitting climax to a career that had seen her finish agonisingly off the podiums at London 2012 and Rio 2016.

After a brief spell away from the sport, she committed to another campaign and has looked impressive through heats, quarterfinals and semis, clocking the fastest time of 7m 17.19s en route to the final. She will have to overcome two-time defending world champion Karolien Florijn of Netherlands, if she is to reclaim the top step on the dais.

Mackintosh faces an even tougher challenge for medals, after finishing second in his semi, then watching three-time world champion Ollie Zeidler of Germany set a new Games record in the second race, where Dane Sverri Nielsen missed qualifying with a faster time than the Kiwi.

After claiming New Zealand's sixth medal at Paris — silver in the men's 49er class — sailing offers more chances of glory at Marseille, where foilers Veerle ten Have and Josh Armit face quarterfinals and semis respectively, with finals also scheduled overnight.

At the Olympic pool, Erika Fairweather contests a starstudded women's 800m freestyle final.

At the track, Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill battle the big boys in the shot put final, while Zoe Hobbs tries to make history in the women's 100m semis. No NZ woman has ever made an Olympic sprint final.
