The New Zealand rowing team has had some stellar performances overnight, with gold, silver and bronze medals adding to the Kiwi medal tally.

Featured in those medal winners are Brooke Francis and Lucy Spoors, who took home gold in their women's double sculls, beating the reigning Olympic and world champions Ancuta Bodnar and Simona Radis of Romania in a close finish at the line.

The pair spoke to 1News at NZ House as the three rowing teams returned to celebrate with the rest of the NZ Olympic team.

Spoors said she hasn't stopped smiling and the whole day has been a whirlwind for her.

"New Zealanders at home were probably on the edge of their seats but we were the same," Spoors told 1News. "We never felt comfortable, we never felt like we had in in the bag, but I think we always believed at every point that it was possible."

The pair both became mothers within a few months of each other two years ago.

Spoors said the most special thing for the pair was having their kids watching and thinking about it has had her in tears all day.

"At the start of the campaign we said we wanted to win an Olympic gold, but we wouldn't do it at the cost of the kids, because they give you perspective and we wanted to put them at the forefront.

"We wanted to be good mums, so to stand up here with an Olympic gold medal, but to know we’ve been good mums and that we've given all we can to the kids, that’s what's getting me today," said Spoors.

Lucy Spoors said she was immensely proud when she watched her sister Phoebe win a bronze medal with the women's four later in the day.

"To be sharing this moment together, I made it clear at the finish line that I was yelling my head off for Phoebe and then again for the men's four, so yeah it's been a really cool day," said Spoors.

The men's four added to the Kiwi medals as they took home silver in their final.

Phoebe Spoors said she saw her sister's coach celebrating on the bank and realised they'd won before her attention switched to her final.

"It was a brief moment and then we had to get on with the job - I saw it after."
