Watch: Thrilling finish as riders come together in mountain biking

July 30, 2024

There was a thrilling finish in the men's mountain biking today as the leading riders touched wheels in the battle for gold.

Britain's Tom Pidcock pulled off an audacious move at the death to snatch victory off France's Victor Koretzky, which earned him boos at the finish.

It completed a stunning comeback for pre-race favourite Pidcock after he had to change a flat tyre early in the race, going from first back to 9th place.

However, Pidcock showed his class and stormed back through the field.

Shortly before the finish line Pidcock ducked through a split in the trees to squeeze by race leader Koretzky.

The move caused the pair to touch wheels, with the Frenchman needing to come to a slight halt to regain his balance.

From there Pidcock raced over the finish line to claim gold as home fans booed.

NZ rider Sam Gaze finished in sixth place after a tough start, he said he was heartbroken after the race.

"The start was just ridiculously fast, when I was out there I tried to go for the bronze but it just didn't happen.

"As soon as I had to let Pidcock go I knew it was over."
