Smith & Caughey’s may stay open with reduced capacity in new proposal

It's been retail royalty, an icon and stalwart of Central Auckland, selling high-end fashion and homewares since 1880.

A new proposal may keep Auckland fashion store Smith & Caughey’s open in a reduced physical capacity – while focusing on the outlet's popular items and online store.

On May 29, the store initiated a staff consultation proposal regarding the potential closure of all retail operations in early 2025. This included prominent department stores in Queen St, Newmarket, and online.

The proposal seemingly marked the end of one of New Zealand’s oldest department stores, which has been open for 144 years, when it was presented to more than 200 staff.

However, after considering feedback from staff and combining it with ideas under consideration from the board, it today identified two potential options for the business’ future.

The first was proceeding with the initial proposal to wind up all retail activities in early 2025.

The second proposal was to downsize the operation, which would close the Broadway Newmarket store and, in February 2025, reduce the footprint of the Queen St store to focus on a collection of "popular categories" and an online catalogue.

"This format would also see adjusting staffing levels to align with the new business size," a spokesperson said.

"We have commenced a further consultation period with our staff on the second option and a potential path forward.

"Our aim is to determine the outcome of the consultation by the end of next week, following this we will provide a further update."
