Le Journal: Day 3 update from the Paris Olympics

Your morning Olympics catch-up on the action you might've missed from overnight, and a look behind the scenes at what’s going on in Paris.

Kiwis land on hallowed clay court

A perfect scheduling storm meant Erin Routliffe and Lulu Sun had a major venue upgrade from one of the outside courts to Philippe Chatrier.

It was a surprise move to centre court, against Italians Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani.

Unfortunately they failed to fire, committing 31 unforced errors to go down 6-2, 6-3.

Black Ferns storm into finals

The Black Ferns continue to dominate the opposition in the women's rugby 7s.

Early this morning they crushed Fiji 38-7 in their final pool match to top the group.

The team plays China in a pool game rematch at 7am Tuesday, they won the first go-around 43-5.

Clash of the titans

A glorious – if not cruel – draw pitted Rafael Nadal against No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic in just the second round in the men’s tennis.

The crowd at Court Philippe-Chatrier adore the Spaniard, who’s won a staggering 14 Roland Garros titles here.

He was a flag bearer during the opening ceremony and is one of the few true megastars to be staying in the Olympic village.

And he mounted a spirited comeback in the second set… only to fall short against Djokovic 6-1, 6-4.

He’ll still be around as he chases doubles glory with Carlos Alcaraz.

'Heartbroken' Sam Gaze

After a tough start to his BMX race, Sam Gaze finished in 6th place with Briton Tom Pidcock claiming gold.

Taking to the Élancourt Hill course in 30-plus degrees heat, the sole Kiwi male rider stayed in the hunt throughout, sitting in bronze medal position near the halfway mark.

Gaze said he was “heartbroken” after the race.

“The start was just ridiculously fast, when I was out there I tried to go for the bronze but it just didn't happen.

“As soon as I had to let Pidcock go I knew it was over.”

But the most exciting moment for Henry McMullan came when he spotted the one and only Tony Hawk today.

Trampolinists

Trampolinists Maddy Davidson and Dylan Schmidt had a spring in their step as they bounced from the athlete’s village to talk to Mei Heron at a nearby café today.

Self-confessed Nutella lover Dylan was hoping to put his months-long practice of requesting one in French to good use.

Not that partner Maddy was keen on hearing his much-recited line.

Unfortunately for the Tokyo bronze medallist, this place had no crepes (or Dylan needs more practice).

Hopefully the only time he’ll be left disappointed these games.
