Police have launched a homicide investigation after a young man died following an "altercation" at a Taranaki address overnight.
Detective Inspector Brent Matuku said emergency services were called to a residential property on Strange St in Waitara after reports of a person being seriously injured in an altercation with another person at around 12.46am.
"The victim was transported to hospital in a critical condition, but sadly later died from his injuries," he said.
Matuku said a 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He was due to appear in New Plymouth District Court today.
Cordons have been put in place and a scene examination would be carried out over the following days, with an "increased police presence in the area" while inquiries remained ongoing.
