Athletes in action: Black Ferns Sevens close on gold medal repeat

Black Ferns Sevens celebrate quarterfinals win over China.

With the postponement of the men's triathlon, attention now turns squarely to Stade de France, where the Black Ferns Sevens have a chance to duplicate their gold-medal exploits at Tokyo three years ago.

The NZ women have been unchallenged through pool play and doubled down on China in the quarterfinals to set up a semi against USA on Wednesday morning.

New Zealand beat the Americans four times without defeat during the World Rugby circuit this year, including the Hong Kong final, so they seem to hold little peril at this stage of their campaign. Another win would put them into a gold-medal contest against either Australia or Canada, likely the Aussies.

This tournament will bring the curtain down on the careers of stalwarts Portia Woodman-Wickliffe and Tyla King — and perhaps more — so the motivation is there to see them off in style.

Meanwhile, the Kiwi rowers will continue their progress towards their finals, with single scullers Emma Twigg and Tom Mackintosh racing quarterfinals and double scullers contesting semis.

Sailors Isaac McHardie and Will McKenzie still lead the 49er fleet after six races, and race three more overnight, winds permitting, while Lewis Clareburt is back in the pool for 200m butterfly.

Elsewhere, American superstar Simone BIles will take the floor for the gymnastics teams final, and Australia and Canada face off in the 'pool of death' in men's basketball.

Surely tonight we crack our medal drought at Paris...
