A person has died following a car fire on State Highway 1 in Northland this afternoon.
Police say they were called to the scene following a report a vehicle had crashed and subsequently caught fire near Maromaku around 1.16pm.
One person inside the vehicle had died, police said.
A second person sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene, a Hato Hone St John spokesperson told 1News.
Stop/go traffic management was in place on SH1 between Kawakawa and Whangārei, according to the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, and delays were expected.

The serious crash unit attended the scene and an investigation into the cause of the crash was underway.
