An 82-year-old man was winched to safety on Great Barrier Island after he went missing while kayaking yesterday.
Police were notified the man had not returned home shortly before 8pm and began searching the shoreline and general area with assistance from the police Eagle helicopter.
"The man was located safe and well at around 12.45am this morning, in dense bush inland from Medlands Beach," a police spokesperson said.
Two police search and rescue members were dropped off by Eagle at the man's location and stayed with him overnight.
Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter said the man was "stranded on cliffs and in a minor condition" when he was winched to safety around 7am.
He was then taken to the Claris Medical Centre on Great Barrier Island, 100km north-east of central Auckland, for checks.
