A number of people were injured following a gang-related incident at a Wairoa rugby match yesterday afternoon.
Police were called to Hunter-Brown St at around 3pm on Saturday.
Wairoa Response Manager Senior Sergeant Scott Leighton said weapons were involved, and a number of people were injured.
He said there were no firearms used.
"This was extremely disappointing, especially as just seven days earlier, we were celebrating two local teams winning titles without incident."
Police were following "positive lines of inquiry" to identify who was involved, he said.
"We are continuing our work to piece together what happened."
Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105.
