Three people have been injured, one seriously, following a fiery car crash near Christchurch overnight.
Police said it responded to reports of a singular vehicle crash in Lyttelton around 1.10am on Saturday morning.
"A vehicle has gone off the bank onto Sutton Quay... It appears three people were transported to hospital two in a moderate condition and one in a serious condition."
Chris Lynch Media reported the injured were teenage girls.
"A nearby worker said three 17-year-old occupants had been driving through the tunnel in a Nissan Skyline at extremely high speeds," Lynch said.
The worker added: "They skidded through the roundabout and crashed over the bank, ending upside down at the bottom. The car then burst into flames."
"The Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination and enquiries are ongoing," police said.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand and St John were both in attendance, with FENZ sending one truck from Christchurch and one from Lyttelton to the scene.
"Upon arrival, occupants were not in the vehicle and the vehicle was well-ablaze," it said.
St John said it was notified at the same time, and responded with seven different units.
"Hato Hone St John was notified of a motor vehicle incident in Lyttelton at 1.10am and responded four ambulances, two rapid responded units, and one manager to the scene.
"Our crews assessed and treated three patients, one in a serious condition and two in a moderate condition; all transported to Christchurch hospital."
