As the Olympic Games officially began in Paris, a wave of Kiwi supporters flocked to the French capital to witness the historic opening ceremony.
Despite the gloomy weather threatening to dampen spirits, the pride and enthusiasm of New Zealand fans remained undiminished.
For many, the journey to Paris was both significant and emotional. The Boyde family proudly waved their flags through the cobbled streets, embodying the vibrant Kiwi spirit.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” another fan at New Zealand House remarked.
“This is Olympic House, and it’s going off!”
The dedication of the supporters was evident, with many sharing personal stories of commitment.
Mary and Kerry Boyde, along with their daughter-in-law Shannon and one-year-old grandson Zach, were present to cheer for Scott Boyde on the Black Sticks team.
“It’s an incredible achievement just to get to this point,” said Shannon.
Mary Boyde reflected on the years of dedication, noting, “This has been a lifetime of effort for Scott and us, over 25 years, from the early days of training to every competition.”
Uncle Grant and Aunt Anissa Boyde were also on hand to lend their support.
In the heart of Paris, the ‘Black Sheep Society’ pub opened early to accommodate the influx of Kiwi fans. The atmosphere was electric, with cheers resonating throughout the venue.
Across town, New Zealand House was also packed with dedicated supporters, including Mary Knewstubb, whose son Andrew has faced significant challenges just to make the Olympic stage.
"We were booked to go to Tokyo, but of course, there were no spectators. But Andrews has been through two ACL injuries, septicemia in his knee, so his big challenge has been just to make the Olympics."
Despite the rain, the Kiwi spirit was unbreakable.
With the opening ceremony complete, the Olympic dreams of many Kiwis have turned into a thrilling reality.
Now, to win some gold.
