Athletes in action: Swimmers, cyclists chase first NZ Olympic medals

July 27, 2024
Erika Fairweather contests the world swimming championships.

Swimmer Erika Fairweather shapes as New Zealand's first real medal prospect at the Paris Olympics, when she contests the 400m freestyle overnight.

Fairweather, 20, enters her second Olympics as reigning world champion over the distance, clocking a 3m 59.44s national record, but ranks only fourth behind rivals that chose to bypass the global meet at Doha in February.

Australian Ariarne Titmus (3m 55.38s) is the defending Olympic champion and current world recordholder, with Canadian Summer McIntosh (3m 56.08s) and American Katie Ledecky (3m 58.35s) also boasting faster entry times.

Fellow Kiwi Eve Thomas finished seventh at the world championships and is another strong contender for a spot in the Olympic final on Sunday morning.

Laurence Pithie trains on the Olympic cycle course.

Road cyclists Laurence Pithie and Kim Cadzow contest their respective individual time trial finals, although medals may prove tough to come by in strong fields.

Rower Emma Twigg will begin the defence of her single sculls gold medal, while Brooke Francis hopes to go one better than her Tokyo double sculls silver with new partner Lucy Spoors.

After defeating Guinea in their tournament opener, the NZ men's football team will chase a second pool victory against USA.
