Every Saturday morning, Helen Milne commutes from Wellington to Porirua to teach kids to play the piano — and she offers her services for free.
She has been teaching for more than a decade, despite the fact she hated piano lessons growing up.
Her lessons last for about 15 minutes, and for good reason — she has 14 students to get through.
"So we can't give them an hour each," she explained with a laugh.
Most of Milne's students or their parents are refugees.
Milne gets paid in food — often traditional delights from Myanmar.
One student, Roadie, has been receiving lessons from Milne for the past 10 years.
"She's very nice. She's generous. She comes every single week," she said.
