Northland remains under a severe thunderstorm watch, with strong wind gusts forecast.
An earlier red warning has now been lifted, but the watch remains for several more hours. The warning had previously covered Kaipara, the Far North and Whangārei.
A yellow severe thunderstorm watch remains in force for Northland until 7pm.
"Another burst of thunderstorms is expected to affect Northland this afternoon and into the early evening," MetService said.
"These thunderstorms are fast moving and there is a potential for SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS producing winds gusting 110 km/h or stronger.
"Wind gusts of this strength can cause some structural damage, including trees and power lines, and may make driving hazardous."
