Trump makes first speech since attempted assassination, major banks announce changes to mortgage rates, and the Government sets a 24-hour pothole repair target.
1 Trump details assassination attempt as he accepts Republican nomination
The 78-year-old former president, known best for his bombast and aggressive rhetoric, offered a softer and more personal message that draws on his brush with death.
"There was blood pouring everywhere, yet, in a certain way I felt very safe because I had God on my side," Trump said. "I'm not supposed to be here tonight."
"The discord and division in our society must be healed. We just heal it quickly. As Americans, we are bound together by a single fate and a shared destiny. We rise together. Or we fall apart," Trump said, wearing a large white bandage on his right ear, as he has all week, to cover a wound he sustained in the shooting at his Pennsylvania rally.
2 Major banks announce changes to mortgage rates
The move comes after the Reserve Bank of New Zealand last week announced the official cash rate will remain at 5.5% – banks are now predicting a cut in the OCR later this year following this week's drop in inflation.
BNZ and Kiwibank are the latest banks to move rates – Bank of China, Heartland Bank, Westpac, ANZ and the Co-operative Bank have all made changes recently.
3 Pharmac director quits over Government's Treaty directive
Associate Health Minister David Seymour this week told Pharmac it was inappropriate for the agency to keep considering the Treaty of Waitangi's place in the health sector.
Dr Anthony Jordan joined the board in December 2021, with his term due to end in December 2024. He said he "could not with good conscience" continue to work for the agency following directions to stop factoring Te Tiriti o Waitangi into its decisions.
4 Attack key as All Blacks prepare to face Fiji in San Diego
The old joke about there being no pictures on completed golf scorecards may apply to the All Blacks given their Test series win over England reaped only four tries in total, but there is little doubt New Zealand’s attack will be a focus against Fiji in San Diego.
The All Blacks are in the United States to sell a vision – and brand in the age of the Silver Lake equity sale – and it's understood a large group of New Zealand Rugby staff have travelled for the match, writes 1News' digital sport reporter Patrick McKendry.
5 Government sets 24-hour pothole repair targets
Transport Minister Simeon Brown said boosting pothole repairs and prevention would deliver a "safe and efficient network" that would support the Government's plans for growth.
"Achieving these targets will reduce the number of potholes on our roads, and the use of premium materials, innovative technology, and increased resources will prevent potholes from forming again in the same location."
Instead of placing cold mix in potholes, contractors would now increase the use of new innovations to ensure that temporary pothole repairs last longer before a permanent reseal can take place.
ONE YEAR ON: YANFEI BAO'S DISAPPEARANCE
On July 19, 2023, the 44-year-old mother and real estate agent was last seen in the Christchurch suburb of Wigram.
A day later, police announced she was missing, and a week after that her disappearance was upgraded to a homicide investigation. Her body has never been found.
Partner Paul Gooch, in a statement released today, said her disappearance "has changed all our lives irreparably".
ONE TAURANGA COMMISSION RETROSPECTIVE
In early 2021, Tauranga City's four-person commission, led by former National MP Anne Tolley, was tasked with turning its fortunes around.
The city's council had been sacked, the CBD was littered with empty shops, and the Covid pandemic gripped New Zealand's fifth largest city.
