Public transport fares will be capped at $50 a week for users in Auckland across buses, trains, and inner harbour ferries from Sunday, the city's transport agency has announced.
A seven-day fare cap will begin when a commuter tags on with their HOP card and will expire at 11.59pm seven consecutive days later.
"The fare cap period will not restart until the next time the customer tags on," Auckland Transport said.
The new initiative replaces the $20 daily fare cap and the $230 bus and train monthly pass when it launches on July 21.
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown said the fare cap was needed as many Aucklanders struggle with the high cost of living.
"The seven-day fare cap gives Aucklanders price certainty, allowing them to budget more easily by knowing they won't pay more than $50 a week. It's about getting back to basics and making better use of what we have — the things we can do now to make a difference for Aucklanders."
He said it was a "key piece" of the Long-term Plan to make transport work better for Aucklanders.
"There's much more on the way for this sector, and I'm looking forward to getting on with the rest of it."
Auckland Transport said around 8% of customers would already benefit or are close to benefiting from the cap.
"It's a great opportunity for people to try public transport for more trips," AT's Stacey van der Putten said.
