Three vehicles destroyed in explosion reported in Coromandel

Three vehicles have been destroyed in an explosion reported near Whitianga, on the Coromandel Peninsula, overnight.

Police said it was investigating the "suspected arson" that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

"A witness called emergency services after hearing an explosion and seeing the glow of flames shortly after 3am," a spokesperson said.

"Attending fire crews discovered three vehicles had been set alight at the Ferry Landing on Panorama Ave, on the opposite side of the channel to Whitianga Wharf."

No arrests have been made and police were making inquiries.

Anyone with relevant information was asked to contact police via 105.
