Parts of Gore's main street iced over as temperatures plummeted to -4.2C on Monday morning after the council left garden sprinklers on overnight.
In a post to its Facebook page, the council warned drivers the road surface on "quite a few streets around Gore and Mataura" was "quite bad", in particular at the Hyde St roundabout and the intersection between Bridge and Kana streets.
One resident responded to the post saying: "the sprinklers going on the garden/road at Hyde St roundabout at midnight was not ideal".
Another said it was not the first time they had been on.
"In the last couple of weeks, there have been a few mornings where it is just plain dangerous."
The council said in another statement that it "completely agrees" the sprinklers should not be going on frosty nights.
"They were suppose [sic] to have been turned off, so we are as surprised as everyone else to learn they'd been on. The team is checking and will make double sure it doesn't happen again.’’
MetService data showed the temperature in Gore dropped as low as -4.2°C on Monday morning.
