Thick fog which blanketed much of Auckland this morning will be back for a few more days yet, 1News meteorologist Dan Corbett has warned.
Twenty-four domestic flights were cancelled and 10 were delayed at Auckland Airport, while drivers were stuck in gridlock during their morning commute.
The fog cleared around midday.
Corbett said the dense fog was caused by moisture from late the previous day combined with light winds this morning.
"Those perfect conditions, that makes the layer of the fog pretty thick and pretty dense," he explained.
"When it’s like that as opposed to little wispy bits, then you know it's a really good, juicy one and it's going to hang around for a long time."
Corbett said Aucklanders are likely to see similar conditions in the coming days.
"Even though the fog has lifted, the dew point temperature — or the saturation point of the air — is still the same," he explained.
"So, when the air cools down tonight, guess what happens? Whoosh — back comes the fog."
A front moving to the north and west of the country will see "some of that fog break up" in parts of Northland and Auckland between 6am and 8am tomorrow morning.
Waikato and Bay of Plenty aren't so lucky, however — the regions will be blanketed in fog "probably through a good part of the morning".
