A police vehicle crashed into a member of the public's vehicle as it responded to a call for backup as a man became "aggressive" during an arrest in Hamilton this morning.
It is the second crash involving a police vehicle in Hamilton within 12 hours. A police vehicle was "significantly damaged" after it crashed on the Fairfield Bridge around 12.25am on Tuesday.
Hamilton City area commander Andrea McBeth said the second incident unfolded after police had activated lights and sirens as a vehicle of interest was sighted on Vernall St around 10.50am.
However, the vehicle continued and turned into a driveway on Vernall St.
The driver exited and attempted to flee the scene on foot but was arrested around 11am, McBeth said.
"During the arrest, occupants of the property became aggressive towards the attending officers, who then made a call for assistance."
A police vehicle responding to this call for help crashed into a member of the public's vehicle at the intersection of Kahikatea Dr and Alison St while engaging in "urgent duty driving" with lights and sirens, McBeth said.
"There were no injuries to the member of the public and one officer received a minor injury to their wrist but did not require medical attention."
The road was blocked and diversions were put in place.
The serious crash unit conducted a scene examination and inquiries are ongoing.
A 21-year-old man is due to appear in the Hamilton District Court in the coming days on charges of assaulting police, driving without a licence, and failing to stop for police.
