1 Former All Black Norm Hewitt dead at 53

Hewitt had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease, his family said in a statement. He made 23 appearances for the All Blacks, playing nine Tests.

In one of rugby's most enduring images, he went face-to-face with England's Richard Cockerill during the haka at Old Trafford in Manchester in 1997.

He has been fondly remembered for his contributions both on and off the field, with teammates, charities, and NZ Rugby paying tribute.

2 Bandaged Trump makes first public appearance since assassination attempt

Sporting a bandage on his right ear, former President Donald Trump made an appearance at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee — his first since an attempted assassination at a campaign rally on Sunday.

Delegates cheered wildly as Trump appeared onscreen backstage and then emerged, visibly emotional, as Lee Greenwood sang God Bless the USA.The presumptive nominee did not address the convention today.

Trump also today named Senator JD Vance as his running mate — a onetime critic who referred to him as an "idiot" and "America's Hitler".

3 Defence Force's $490m housing upgrade for Waiouru military camp

The first $75m stage of the project will build 50 new homes for military families on newly developed land in partnership with local iwi Ngāti Rangi.

The Defence Force says it needs 211 homes to support military and civilian personnel at Waiouru Military Camp. It plans to modernise a further 161 homes in a second stage.

Waiouru has been base for an army training area since World War II. According to Defence Force information, the military camp hosts about 500 civilian and military staff.
