One person has died in a house fire in Hokitika last night.

Emergency services sent four fire trucks to the blaze on Hoffman St shortly after 9pm on Sunday.

Police said one person was in the house at the time of the fire and was found unresponsive.

"Despite the efforts of emergency services staff, the person subsequently passed away," a police spokesperson said.

The fire was being treated as unexplained, and Fire and Emergency said a fire investigator would arrive at the scene today.

"A scene guard was in place overnight and further inquiries will be undertaken today to determine the cause of the fire."
